Should Web Designers be Worried?

No, and here is why!

I once went to a networking event and was asked,

Are you worried being a web designer will become obsolete?

Because building and launching a website was now so easily and readily available and accessible to entrepreneurs and business owners, especially with the likes of Canva, AI, and now with the AI website building platform Framer (if you haven't heard of Framer keep reading).

I thought it was an interesting question, and in my response, I couldn't deny that it was easier for people to build and launch websites, BUT there are a few things that us designers can do that AI and website builders like Canva can't.

1. Save time - yes in some aspects it's quick to tell the platform what to build, but are these business owners asking it to do the right things? Is it taking longer because what it produces isn't what they were trying to communicate - I can't be the only one who has closed ChatGPT because of the unhelpful answers it's given me. And there are business owners out there, established, who just don't have the time to fiddle around with a new platform and create and launch a website, especially when they are trying to build and establish credibility, elevate their online presence, and actually get results.

2. Strategy - I will die on this hill, strategy is the most important element of website design, you need a purpose and goals and as designers, we create and add the right elements, structure, and pages to support these goals. Creating a strategy isn't something these ready-made canva website templates and AI have at the moment. I don't think Canva ever will. However I do see AI potentially having the capability to do so, but for now - it's us designers who can connect with these business owners, ask the right questions and create a strategy for the website design.

So should you be worried, no, I don’t think so, what are your thoughts?
